Keelung Urban Renewal Design | 2015
Teamwork with Randy Lo
Keelung City is a significant port city located in the northeastern part of Taiwan. It was founded by the Spanish Empire in 1626. However, the original infrastructure and buildings in the old city are gradually deteriorating, necessitating urgent urban renewal. The site in question is situated alongside the Tianliao River in Keelung. Historically, Tianliao River served as the first canal in Taiwan for the transportation of timber and coal. Today, it has transformed into a popular sightseeing destination.
The layout design serves as a strategic sector to stimulate the local economy. The layout encourages visitors to "loop" through the stores, fostering engagement and boosting economic activity. To enhance human comfort, a greenbelt park has been designed to improve air quality within the urban area and provide a tranquil retreat from the bustling city life. People can enjoy leisurely walks in the park, shop at market stalls, and savour their time in a serene environment. Additionally, a pedestrian arcade has been incorporated to provide shade during the summer months, creating a comfortable shopping experience for pedestrians.
Various spatial programs have been introduced to enrich the site. A cycle track runs alongside the river, offering an opportunity to explore the city and catch a glimpse of local life. On the second floor, an Entrepreneurship Center has been established as a bridge between education and work. It facilitates the development and provision of entrepreneurship education and training programs, empowering local creators to establish their studios and contribute to the growth of art and culture. The third and fourth floors house residential units, prioritizing privacy and providing residents with breathtaking views of the city from their own homes.
Utilizing skills in Rhino and V-Ray, we have developed a comprehensive plan for the revitalization of the Keelung City site. By integrating elements such as a thoughtfully designed layout, green spaces, and diverse programs, we aim to create a vibrant and sustainable urban environment that preserves the city's historical legacy while embracing modern needs.
